Top Ten Tips to Getting Pregnant

Just how long have you been trying to get pregnant?  Have months and months passed by and the only results have been negative ones? You might be nearing the point where you need to visit your doctor and find out  if there could be fertility problems for you or perhaps with your partner. You may think that your only option may be IVF – if you are going to have a baby at all.

Well, before you make that doctor’s appointment it may come as a surprise to find out that there are steps you can easily take for yourself to increase the chances of conception.  It may be as simple as finding out exactly when you are ovulating either by using an ovulation kit or by plotting your cycle on an ovulation calendar. The time that conception can take place each month is minute and you need to make the most of that time wisely!

Here are your Top Ten Tips:

1. You MUST give up smoking – again this should apply to both you and your partner. Smoking affects the fertility of both men and women, and if you do manage to conceive and continue to smoke this will cause the fetus to be underweight.

2. Give up alcohol –  this also affects your fertility and can damage your fetus if you continue when pregnant. Some reports say one unit of alcohol a day is ok, but really it is better to give up completely.

3. Improve your diet – the healthier you are the more likely it is that your body will have the correct nutrients to for fertilization to take place.

4. Maintain a healthy weight – being overweight or even being underweight can cause you difficulties in conceiving a child.

5. Take a vitamin & mineral supplement preferably one specifically for preconception. These are available formulated for both men and women. They include folic acid for women which is an essential ingredient to aid the development of a healthy fetus.

6. Calculate the exact time of ovulation. This can be done using charts or by using a proprietary ovulation predictor kit. Finding out when you ovulate is so important – all of your efforts may be being wasted if you are not timing things correctly.

7. If you can, try to RELAX! Relaxation tapes or yoga being stressed out does not help when you are trying to get pregnant

8. Try to cut down on caffeine – caffeine inhibits the absorption of iron which is one of the essentials for conception and to producing a healthy child.

9. Do not use any sort of douche, artificial lubricant or vaginal spray. Some of these products actually dry up the cervical mucus and some can even kill off the sperm.

10. Some advice just for the guys. Boxers rather than briefs (yes its true!) stops the testicles from overheating and keeps the sperm healthier.
